No whale sharks in Gorontalo
ENGLISH:
leaving the TOGEAN ISLANDS wasn’t easy… especially with the outlook of 14 hours on the night-ferry :( :(
on top of it all luck wasn’t on our side and we couldn’t get any business class tickets for the ferry (it sounds much better than it actually is – business class would mean a proper seat for us ta-taaa…). well, with the cheapest tickets in our hands we climbed up and into the steerage to the locals …a little shock for both of us (remember: felix is INDONESIAN!) and even now i have a hard time finding the right words to describe the situation there: lots of people, crying children, dirt, sweat, floor, narrowness, staring and felix mumbling with a nervous grin “pick a spot, honey”.
for a moment i was already somewhat strategically checking for a “good” spot… and then i found them: glorious stairs!! there was nothing to lose, we could only gain something! once upstairs we found a nearly empty deck, a small bar, a handful of chairs and the cabins of the captain and his crew. our night was saved and we left the TOGEANS with an amazing view from the very top of the ferry.
next morning we arrived at sleepy GORONTALO. we had BIG plans! for several years already the shrimp factory lures whale sharks into the bay and we wanted to see these friendly giants… our excitement was however for nothing :( no whale sharks in GORONTALO :( :(
despite the disappointment we spent two lovely days in GORONTALO and taught english at our host family’s house – this time: children and adults mixed. :) we also walked around the area and rummaged the market in search of a birthday present for the daughter of our host family. the sweet girl was very motivated to learn english and wouldn’t leave our side. as i studied “the time” with her we decided to buy her a watch. it took us quite some time to find the perfect watch (so many colours!). we ended our shopping with a lilac watch for lila (yes, that’s the little girl’s name) :)
