Banda 'Spicy' Island

ENGLISH:
it was time to say goodbye to SULAWESI and hello to CENTRAL MALUKU. with fever and a big bottle of water in my hands we flew from MANADO to AMBON – yes, it was a lionair flight and yes, it felt like a ride on the bus.

side note: since we were greeted by a cow at the airport in AMBON we totally get the INDONESIAN news “lion air crashes into cow”

we only had one day in AMBON and i used this day to recover …sleep - sleep – and a bit more sleep.

on the following day (without fever!), it got exciting! we collected our reserved flight tickets, walked once across the airport and climbed into a tiny plane. :) :) as soon as the door was closed we taxied off… we flew over lots and lots of water and enjoyed our little adventure.

after only one hour, we started to land with the most dramatic setting between GUNUNG API (= volcano) and BANDA BESAR (= island). our plane conquered several gusts of wind and finally dropped roughly onto the runway.
to felix and my surprise we found the runway being used as a normal road shortly after we had landed …what else could be done with a nice bit of asphalt? :) :)
the next surprise came as soon as we entered the airport building: we found exactly one room with a big table for baggage claim. we took our backpacks and jumped onto two motorbike-taxis …searching our accommodation and exploring BANDA NAIRA!

an answer to a frequently asked question: how did you actually find these small islands?
still in SINGAPORE someone told me about a charity project on the BANDA ISLANDS. i had to google it and discovered the thrilling history of the place. the spices on the BANDA ISLANDS already twisted everyone’s head in the past and caused harsh disputes which led to an unbelievable trade between the british and the dutch: MANHATTEN (NEW YORK) was exchanged for the tiny PULAU RUN (BANDA)
google and google maps will give you the exact details :)

BANDA NAIRA up and down
on the island our 2-some quickly turned into a 4-some. dirk and mercy moved into the room next to us …and as they say: if the shoe fits :) :)
we booked a boat and went snorkeling on the slopes of GUNUNG API. this big volcano last erupted in the 80s and has black lava rocks on one side …impressive! head under or head on top, it was simply beautiful :)

on another day we went up north to MALOLE BEACH to snorkel at the fantastic reef there. the giant moray eels scared mercy and me quite a bit …these teeth and the grumpy expression on the “face”!
we also explored the market in BANDA NAIRA …sometimes the 2 of us, sometimes the 4 of us and of course always in search of yummy food :)
felix and i also walked up to the old fort, visited an old palest, a small museum and several schools with curious eyes looking at us. on top of it all we met tons of cats and they know very well how to steal our time… :)

the days went by pretty quickly and we decided (for many complicated reasons) to avoid the big festival on BANDA NAIRA and escaped with dirk and mercy to HATTA ISLAND.
