Lazy dragons ...Komodo National Park

bevor ich euch von KOMODO berichte, zwicke ich noch ein paar zeilen ueber unsere reise dorthin ein. der flug in den sueden verdient einfach ein paar zeilen :)

frueh am morgen standen wir beim check-in und erwarteten vier tickets die uns via SURABAYA nach LABUHANBAJO bringen sollten. wir waren durch die knappe umstiegszeit (30 minuten!) leicht nervoes und hofften, dass unser erster flug ueberpuenktlich landen wuerde und unser anschlussflug mit verspaetung zu erwischen sei. wunschdenken… wie sich am flughafen schnell herausstellte! 

uns wurden sechs tickets in die hand gedrueckt und mit einem freundlichen laecheln 

mitgeteilt: „the actual route is like this“. also, ein flug mehr :) :) und noch weniger zeit zum umsteigen – yay! 

unser erster flug brachte uns puenktlich nach MAKASSAR. 

unser zweiter flug brachte uns mit verspaetung nach SURABAYA und unser anschlussflug sollte zu dieser zeit bereits in der luft sein. unsere hoffnung sank ganz-ganz tief… wir liefen dennoch wie zwei wilde, wurden dann nochmal durchgescannt und (halleluja!) zu unserem mega verspaeteten letzten flug gewunken. kaum einen fuss in den flieger gesetzt, fingen wir und auch die flugbegleiter an zu lachen …wir bestiegen (erschoepft vom laufen und mit halb offenen taschen von der kontrolle) ein und dasselbe flugzeug …selbe piloten …selbe crew!!

drei fluege, drei zeitzonen und ein INDONESIEN – geschafft!! 

nach dem touristen-freien AMBON war LABUHANBAJO ein kleiner touristen-schock. wir tauften die kleine stadt schnell mal auf ‚UBUD BY THE BEACH“. man kann sich ohne probleme mit englisch verstaendigen und an jeder ecke werden einem touren zum KOMODO NATIONAL PARK angeboten. 

nachdem wir die ersten tage langsam verstreichen liessen, machten wir uns am dritten tag auf zur drachensuch :) 

um 6 uhr morgens schippte unser boot aus dem hafen und steuerte nach zwei stunden fahrt PADAR ISLAND an. die kleine wanderung war bei der hitze ganz schoen anstrengend …heiss – heisser – geschmolzen! dafuer wurde die aussicht mit jedem schritt besser :) im bild seht ihr die drei unterschiedlichen straende dort: weisser sandstrand, schwarzer sandstrand und pinker sandstrand (leider-leider sieht man das pink im bild nur leicht) 

etwas spaeter ging es weiter auf die bekannte KOMODO ISLAND. bei der ankunft erhielten wir eine kurze einfuehrung und stapften dann gemeinsam mit drei guides und ihren langen stoecken in den wald. es dauerte nicht lange und dann standen wir auch schon vor vier komodo dragons.

side note: attacken der riesen echsen zu besprechen, waehrend diese nur 5 meter vor einem liegen, ist nicht hilfreich. die komodo dragons scheinen wirklich alles zu koennen …ausser fliegen ;)

gluecklich die komodo dragons gesehen zu haben und gluecklich die insel mit allen koerperteilen wieder zu verlassen, steuerten wir zwei schoene schnorchelplaetze an. am sogenannten manta point suchten wir leider vergeblich nach den eleganten manta rays …alle auf reisen :( stattdessen entdeckten wir einen delfin und mehrere schildkroeten. 

am spaeten nachmittag beendeten wir unseren abwechslungsreichen ausflug und schippten die zwei stunden zurueck nach LABOHANBAJO. 

an unserem letzten tag in LABOHANBAJO genossen wir erneut unsere terrasse, gingen durch die stadt und schossen ein paar fotos von der schoenen bucht.

before i start telling you about KOMODO i squeeze in some lines about the journey. - the flight deserves a few lines :)

in the early morning hours we stood in front of the check-in counter and expected four tickets which would bring us via SURABAYA to LABUHANBAJO. we were kind of nervous due to our short transfer time (30 minutes) in SURABAYA and hoped for a more than punctual first flight and a delayed second flight. wishful thinking… as it quickly turned out at the airport! 

the lady at the counter handed six tickets over to us and told us with a friendly smile: “the actual route is like this”. meaning, another flight :) :) and even less time – yay!

our first flight landed in time and brought us back to MAKASSAR. 

our second flight was delayed and we reached SURABAYA way too late. our last flight should have been up in the air by then. we had hardly any hope... nevertheless, we decided to run. like two crazy cats we ran, had to go through the security check one more time and were waived to our super delayed last flight (hallelujah!). hardly inside the airplane we and the airplane crew started laughing… we boarded (exhausted and with our bags still somewhat open from the security check) the exact same airplane …same pilots … same crew!! 

three flights, three time zones and one INDONESIA – done! 

after the tourist-free AMBON we got a little tourist-shock in LABUHANBAJO and eventually named the little town ‘UBUD BY THE BEACH‘. english is not a problem and at every corner people try to sell trips to the KOMODO NATIONAL PARK. 

we decided to take things slowly and only on our third day we jumped on a boat to go dragon hunting :) 

at 6am our little boat shipped us out of the harbor. two hours later, we reached PADAR ISLAND and hiked up the steep hill. to be honest, it was exhausting …hot-hotter-melting! it was however quite rewarding as the view got better with every step further up. :) in the photo you can see the three different beaches: white beach, black beach, pink beach (unfortunately, our camera couldn’t capture the pink all that well).

a little later, we went to the well-known KOMODO ISLAND and pretty much immediately received a short introduction about the do’s and don’ts on the island. together with three guides including their wooden sticks we then walked into the woods. it didn’t take long before we stood in front of four komodo dragons. 

side note: discussing attacks while standing only 5 meters in front of these big lizards is really not helpful. they seem to be able to do just everything  …except flying :)

glad to have seen the komodo dragons and also glad to leave the island with all parts of our bodies we shipped off to two nice snorkeling spots. we weren’t very lucky at the so called manta point as none of the elegant manta rays showed up …all traveling :(  instead, we saw a dolphin and several turtles. 

in the late afternoon, our trip came to an end and we went back to LABOHANBAJO.

on our last day in LABOHANBAJO we again enjoyed our terrace, walked around town and took some photos of the beautiful bay.
