Green... Greener... Ruteng!

"hello mr, i saw you at the wedding!"

ENGLISH:
we left one of the curviest roads behind us: LABUHANBAJO – RUTENG
choosing a seat at the very back of the bus didn’t help the whole thing… after some hours the bus dropped us in the middle of the rice field at 1188m above sea level.
luckily, our host family quickly found us and immediately wrapped us in a thick sarong. we learnt to really appreciate the sarong due to the low temperatures at night. the friendly host family shared pretty much everything with us …food, arak, culture, private stuff… we quickly felt at home.

together with our host brother (he was younger than us… oh dear!) we hiked through the rice fields around his house. during sunrise the rice fields shimmered golden and apart from that there were rice fields wherever we looked.
on our way we met cows including digested food …they only do that to make us watch every step we take :) :)
the farmers had quite a bit of fun with us …in comparison to them we must have looked like two slow snails sliding down the muddy paths. :) enjoy the pictures of this idyllic place.

our host family also got to know us better and as soon as i said “saya guru di SINGAPURA“ (= i am a teacher in SINGAPORE) they brought me to the high school not too far away from their house. in the small village everyone knows everyone and so we were allowed to join mr andi and his students. it took about a minute, then the kids were mine and mr andi happily chatted away with felix in one corner of the classroom. :) :) seemingly more interesting!
the kids were all very friendly and i even got some small letters from them. very sweet! at the end of the school day we -of course- had to take a photo. – for the photo mr andi broke loose from felix and posed with all of us …haha!
after that, everyone went home …by foot, with the scooter, inside the bus or on top of the bus.

the following day, we managed to organize a scooter and rolled into the center of RUTENG. we stopped at the market, were offered lots of things (especially chilli and fish) and finally bought fruit for the day. afterwards, we drove to the more or less famous spider web rice fields. it took us about an hour to reach and to find a spot for our scooter. a farmer saw us parking our scooter and immediately invited us to join him and his family on the rice field. he showed us the middle of the spider web rice field and then led us to his family. we got a warm welcome and shortly after had coffee in our hands. – cooking in the middle of the rice field works perfectly fine!
we shared our fruit with the friendly family and felix had to translate all my 1000 questions. hehe :)
it was a pity that a dark rain cloud started to bother us after only half an hour with them …we had to say goodbye.

however, our day wasn’t quite over yet: WEDDING in RUTENG
one of the high school teachers invited our host family and us to her wedding …we wouldn't miss it for the world! :) with our “best” clothes we hopped onto the scooter again and followed our host family to the bride’s house. because of the loud music it became pretty obvious which house it had to be… we quickly congratulated the bride and groom and were then waived over to the food. (there is nothing else more important than food …in INDONESIA anyway!) :) :)

side note: never mistake a chili for a bean! i am a blind chicken doing exactly that + going up in flames a second later …my taste buds are on holiday for the time being.

after the food it was time to dance …quite smart to celebrate in a cold region like RUTENG - everyone was dancing to keep somewhat warm :) after rejecting some men’s offer to dance i grabbed little florian (son of our host family) and danced away.
a little later, the bride’s mom somewhat forced felix onto the dance floor. well, she wanted to dance and a “no” was not an option. very amusing! :) :) felix did very well though – just look at the video :)

…a fun evening which would follow us during the next days… "hello mr, i saw you at the wedding!"
